Hotel Tips

An increasing number of hotels are calling themselves "pet-friendly". However, there are different levels of how friendly these places really are to our furry travel companions.

  •     When making a reservation for yourself and your pet, it is important to call ahead and ask specific questions:
  1. Are guests with pets assigned to smoking rooms? Obviously, not all pet owners are smokers and for those non-smokers this would make for an unpleasant stay.
  2. Are there size restrictions on the pets?
  3. Is there a limit to number of pets?
  4. Are there additional fees incurred when bringing a pet along?
  5. Is there a large, easily-accessible, grassy area to walk your pet?
  6. Does the hotel have a relationship with a local Veterinarian in the event of a medical emergency?
  7. Are there any additional perks for pets? Some locations offer perks such as special treats, grooming services, or maps to the local dog parks.
  • A red flag would be raised if the receptionist answering the phone at the hotel is unable to answer most of your questions. If the staff has not been thoroughly trained on their pet regulations, you and your pet may not be as welcome as the marketing materials suggest.
  • When leaving your pet in the hotel room alone, place the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door to prevent any unexpected "escapes".
  • Be a considerate guest.
    • Bring toys along if they will help keep your dog quiet when alone in the room.
    • Be sure to clean up after your pet while on walks. Have bags along at all times.
